Young woman smilingIf you or your physician suspect that you may have a condition known as sleep apnea, you will require a home sleep study in Arlington Heights for an accurate diagnosis. The sleep disorder causes numerous pauses in breathing frequently throughout the night. Not only does this decrease your sleep quality, but it can also lead to several severe health complications, like heart disease. To protect your general health and to restore a restful night’s sleep, the home sleep study will be used to create an effective treatment plan.

What is a Home Study?

A home sleep study involves wearing a device that will monitor you while you sleep. It is a simple device that attaches to your index finger while wrapping around your wrist. This provides your dentist with information about your oxygen levels and heart rate. Using the data gathered, it can be determined if you have the sleep disorder.

While it is an effective means for diagnosis, many people find it uncomfortable or struggle to sleep with the device. To make the experience easier, there are a few simple tips to keep in mind.

Tips for Your Home Sleep Study

  1. Don’t Take a Nap: It is best to wear yourself out the day of the study, so you do not have any difficulty falling asleep. If you find yourself tired throughout the day, it is best to avoid taking a nap, which may leave you tossing and turning at night.
  2. Create a Comfortable Environment: To help encourage a good night’s sleep, create a sleep-friendly environment. Keep the room dark and avoid unnecessary noise in the room, like the TV.
  3. Avoid Stimulates: To prevent anything from keeping you awake at night, it is best to avoid caffeine and nicotine. Not only can they prevent you from falling asleep, but they can also interfere with the test results.
  4. Stick to Your Routine: In anticipation for the upcoming study, you may be a bit anxious, which can throw you out of your normal routine. It is best to stick to your usual daily schedule as much as possible.
  5. Control Anxiety: It is not uncommon to feel anxious before the study. Use relaxation techniques to help calm your nerves, like yoga. If you are still concerned, talk to your dentist about additional methods to help you feel calm.
