sleeping womanFor years, individuals with sleep problems had to undergo a laboratory test to get a diagnosis for their condition. However, thanks to advances in modern technology, doctors and dentists are now able to offer the option of a home sleep study in Arlington Heights. Here, we answer three of the most common questions about diagnostic tool.

How Does a Home Sleep Study Work?

If you suspect you have a sleep disorder, simply schedule a consultation with a doctor or dentist who offers home sleep studies. After they chat with you about the issues you’re experiencing, they’ll loan you a small device that will keep track of your sleep.

In our office, we use the WatchPAT from Itamar Medical. It is a small, comfortable gadget that you wear around your wrist and index finger. Simply follow the instructions we provide for using it, then return it to us the next day. We’ll analyze the results and recommend a treatment plan to get you on the road to more restful nights.

What Does the Sleep Study Device Measure?

The PAT of WatchPAT stands for Peripheral Arterial Tone. That sounds complicated, but it basically boils down to the fact that the device monitors physiological signals that indicate whether you are sleeping well. When an expert reviews data from the device, they can determine if you experienced apneas (periods when you were not breathing) during the night.

Understandably, the data from the WatchPAT device is not as extensive as what would be revealed during a laboratory sleep test. Still, it is an extremely effective way for doctors and dentists to diagnose sleep apnea in Arlington Heights.

What Are the Advantages of a Home Sleep Study?

There are some significant benefits to choosing a home sleep study, chief among which is that you get to sleep in an environment that you’re familiar with. Other advantages of this diagnostic method include:

  • A home sleep study is often more affordable than one that takes place in a laboratory.
  • If you live far away from a sleep laboratory, you can save significant time on travel.
  • It can take weeks to get an appointment at a sleep lab; with at-home testing, you can expect a diagnosis in much less time.

However, there are a few disadvantages to home sleep studies, one being that they are best for detecting sleep apnea. They may not be able to detect other nighttime disorders. After you talk to your dentist or physician about your symptoms, they’ll recommend the type of sleep study that is best for your circumstances.

A home sleep study in Arlington Heights is a convenient and comfortable way to discover whether you have sleep apnea. If you suspect you have this serious disorder, get in touch with an expert who can diagnose and treat the problem. We hope you have lots of restful nights in your future!
